Disaster management is the process of planning for and responding to natural or man-made disasters. It involves organizing resources to mitigate the damage caused by calamities and a systematic strategy for handling catastrophe prevention, readiness, response, and recovery duties. Disasters are defined as disruptions on a massive scale, either natural or man-made, occurring in short or long periods, which can lead to human, material, economic, or environmental hardships beyond the bearable capacity of the affected society. Disaster management can be categorized into three steps:

1. Pre-disaster management: This phase is related to rescue even before any possible disaster arises. The most important purpose of this is to mitigate human loss. It includes the development of an information technology system, mobilization of resources for necessary action, assessment of disaster, and issuance of a warning to the people through media, radio, etc. Transporting people to a safe place in case of disaster occurrence is also included.

2. Management during disasters: This is one of the important phases that depend on the level of pre-disaster management phase. The process of quick action and the help of the victims of the disaster-prone areas, transporting them to safe areas are the base of this. In this phase, food, clothing, and health facilities are also provided to the affected people.

3. Post-disaster management: This phase is related to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the affected areas. It includes the restoration of essential services, such as water supply, electricity, and communication, and the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure.

In class 9, students learn about disaster management as a part of their curriculum. They learn about the types of disasters, how to prepare for them, and how to respond to them. They also learn about the Disaster Management Act of 2005, which defines disaster management as an integrated process of planning, organizing, coordinating, and implementing measures that are necessary for prevention, reduction of risk, readiness, promptness in dealing with a disaster, assessing the severity of the effects of any disaster, rescue and relief, and rehabilitation and reconstruction.
