Domperidone is a medicine that increases the movements or contractions of the stomach and bowel. It is used to treat the following conditions:
- Nausea and vomiting caused by other drugs used to treat Parkinsons Disease.
- Stomach-related issues, such as nausea and vomiting, as well as stomach pain and discomfort caused by decreased movement of the stomach and upper gastrointestinal tract.
- Boosting breastmilk supply.
Domperidone works by causing the muscles at the top of your stomach to tighten and the muscles at the bottom of your stomach to relax, which makes you less likely to be sick (vomit). It also blocks messages in your brain that cause you to feel sick. Domperidone helps increase your milk supply by stimulating the release of prolactin, which stimulates breast milk production.
It is important to note that domperidone should only be taken under the immediate supervision of a doctor, and the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. Domperidone is usually only prescribed for a short time (up to 1 week).
