DRS stands for Defensive Runs Saved, which is a statistic used in baseball to measure a players entire defensive performance by attempting to measure how many runs a defender saved. It takes into account errors, range, outfield arm, and other factors. DRS uses Baseball Info Solutions data to chart where each ball is hit, and it was developed to take range into account when measuring a players defensive ability. Any positive number is above average, and the best fielders typically have a DRS figure of 15 to 20 for a season. DRS is a more in-depth way to evaluate fielders than some traditional defensive stats, such as fielding percentage, which fails to account for a fielders defensive range. DRS statistics are only available from the 2003 MLB season through the present.
