DS-160 is an online nonimmigrant visa application form for temporary travel to the United States, and for K (fiancé(e)) visas. It is submitted electronically to the Department of State website via the Internet. The form is used by Consular Officers to process the visa application and, combined with a personal interview, determine an applicant’s eligibility for a nonimmigrant visa. The DS-160 is free of charge and can be accessed online by the visa applicant, who can simply print out a confirmation sheet with a bar code and bring it to the interview. The bar code allows the Embassy to electronically access the information contained in the DS-160. Personal data entered on the DS-160 online application will only be viewed electronically at the Consulate where the applicant intends to apply. The application should be completed at least 48 hours prior to the appointment, and applicants should make sure to indicate the correct Embassy or Consulate where the appointment will be held. Incorrectly completed applications may delay the visa process. The online DS-160 application replaced the DS-156, DS-157, DS-158, and DS-3032, which are no longer necessary. The application can be saved and returned to later as long as the process is completed within 30 days. The form takes approximately 90 minutes to complete.
