DSN stands for Defense Switched Network, which is a dedicated telecommunication network used by the Department of Defense (DOD) and the U.S. government to provide long-distance communications service worldwide. The purpose of DSN is to handle essential command and control, operations, intelligence, logistical, diplomatic, and administrative traffic. It is a group of government-owned and leased physical cables that interconnect everything and can be used free of charge worldwide. Soldiers can employ this communication system at any time, whether during peacetime, preattack, or in times of crisis. Every location is assigned a specific DSN number, guaranteeing uninterrupted connectivity regardless of the soldiers whereabouts. DSN is still available to DOD because individuals are supposed to use the network when making a long-distance telephone call.
