The DSN stands for Defense Switched Network, which is a telephone system that has been around in the military for more than 100 years. It is the provider of long-distance communications service for the Department of Defense (DoD) . The DSN is designed to support the Department of Defense and U.S. government to allow users to call from post to post or other military branches within DOD. It is a group of government-owned and leased physical cables that interconnect everything and can be used free of charge worldwide. The purpose of DSN is to handle essential command and control, operations, intelligence, logistical, diplomatic, and administrative traffic. Soldiers can employ this communication system at any time, whether during peacetime, preattack, or in times of crisis. Every location is assigned a specific DSN number, guaranteeing uninterrupted connectivity regardless of the soldiers whereabouts. The DSN numbers oversee communications encompassing information, sound, and vision within the Department of Defense. It is worth noting that dialing a DSN number from a cell phone is incompatible as they exclusively function with military phones located solely within military bases.
