E-safety, also known as internet safety, online safety, cyber safety, or electronic safety, is the act of maximizing a users awareness of personal safety and security risks to private information and property associated with using the internet and other electronic media. It is concerned with supporting children and young people to develop safer online behaviors, both in and out of school, and should form a fundamental part of schools and colleges safeguarding and child protection measures.
E-safety is often defined as the safe and responsible use of technology, including the use of the internet and other means of communication using electronic media such as text messages and online platforms. It may also refer to the action of protecting individuals from harmful content online, such as adult content, grooming, and cyberbullying.
E-safety is less about restriction and more about education about the risks, as well as the benefits, so we can feel confident online. It is constantly evolving, and all teaching and non-teaching staff should be aware and able to recognize e-safety issues. Online safety training is available to help individuals learn about how children and young people use existing technology and the risks which form a part of their online world.
