E15 gasoline is a blend of gasoline and ethanol, with 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline. It is a type of gasoline that is refined with 85% unleaded gas and 15% ethanol. E15 has been available through retail distributors since 2012 and can be used in all flexible-fuel vehicles, but it is blended primarily for 2001-and-newer cars and SUVs. E15 is higher in octane than regular gasoline, typically 88 octane while E10 has an octane rating of 87. E15 is cheaper per gallon than typical unleaded blends, and it works in most 2001-to-present gas-powered pickups. However, E15 has not been approved by the EPA for use in non-automotive engines like boats, motorcycles, lawn mowers, and other small or off-road engines because it wasn’t tested. E10 remains the limit for passenger vehicles older than model year 2001 and for other non-road and small engines and vehicles that use gasoline, such as lawn mowers, motorcycles, and boats.
