In hockey, EBUG stands for Emergency Backup Goaltender. This is a rule that requires NHL teams to have a backup goalie available in case of an emergency, such as both the starter and backup getting injured. The EBUG is not on the teams roster but attends all its home games and occasionally practices with the team. They are typically an everyday individual who has past goaltending experience.

EBUGs are rarely used in a regular-season game, but there have been situations where they have entered games. For example, in 2020, David Ayres, a building operator for the Toronto Maple Leafs, played for the Carolina Hurricanes against Toronto after goalies James Reimer and Petr Mrazek were injured. Ayres saved eight of 10 shots in a 6-3 win, becoming the first emergency backup goalie to be credited an NHL win.

EBUGs are usually local non-professional goalies who stay ready to sub in for either team in exchange for a free ticket. Its a very rare occurrence, but when it happens, its always a fantastic story.
