ECNR stands for Emigration Check Not Required, while ECR stands for Emigration Check Required. The Indian government categorizes passports into these two types. An ECNR passport is issued to individuals who meet certain eligibility criteria, such as having passed 10th grade or having a higher degree. An ECNR passport holder is not required to obtain clearance from the Protector of Emigrants (POE) if they travel to certain countries for employment purposes. By default, all passports issued after 2007 have an ECNR status, otherwise, they will be given an ECR check if the passport holder needs to clear an emigration check. Children under 15 years old will get an ECR status passport automatically.
