An editorial is an article that presents the newspapers opinion on an issue. It reflects the majority vote of the editorial board, the governing body of the newspaper made up of editors and business managers. Editorials are usually unsigned, and they are meant to influence public opinion, promote critical thinking, and sometimes cause people to take action on an issue. Editorials have an introduction, body, and conclusion like other news stories, and they provide an objective explanation of the issue, especially complex issues. They also have a timely news angle and opinions from the opposing viewpoint that refute directly the same issues the writer addresses. Good editorials engage issues, not personalities, and refrain from name-calling or other petty tactics of persuasion. Editorial content in journalism refers to opinion pieces meant to persuade an audience on a specific issue. Editorial pages are where newspapers publish their views on current events, both local and national. They typically feature letters to the editor from members of the public, and the page opposite this page is called the op-ed page and frequently contains opinion pieces by writers not directly affiliated with the publication. Op-eds run on the page opposite the editorial page and often publish opinion articles written by people not employed by the newspaper. The editorial pages are under the direction of an editor outside the news division, and newspaper people call this "separation of church and state," meaning there is a line between news and opinion that must not be crossed. To do so strips a newspaper of its most valuable asset -- credibility.
