El Clásico is the name given to any football match between rival clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid. The term originally referred to competitions held in the Spanish championship, but now includes every match between the clubs, such as those in the UEFA Champions League, Supercopa de España, and Copa del Rey. The two teams meet twice during a season, with an additional two times in the Copa del Rey, Champions League, and the Supercopa de España, and possibly in the UEFA Super Cup as well. The first El Clásico was played on May 13, 1902, at the old horse racing track in Madrid, as part of the Concurso Madrid de Foot-Ball Association, better known as the Copa de la Coronación, an unofficial competition. The rivalry between the two teams has become a global phenomenon and is considered one of the biggest club games in the world. The name "El Clásico" means "The Classic" in Spanish and "El Clàssic" in Catalan.
