Elderflower liqueur is a sweet, floral, and aromatic liqueur made from the white elderflowers of the elderberry plant. The most well-known brand of elderflower liqueur is St-Germain, which is made using the petals of Sambucus nigra from the Savoie region in France). The flowers are hand-picked once a year in the late spring, and each bottle is numbered with the year the petals were collected. The fresh elderflowers are macerated in grape neutral spirit within 48 hours of being picked, sweetened with sugar, and then blended to produce the liqueur. Elderflower liqueur has a delicate taste that can be easily paired with gin or vodka and plays well with a variety of herbs and spices. It is a versatile ingredient in cocktails and can be used to make a variety of drinks, including the St-Germain Spritz. Elderflower liqueur is also a great stand-alone aperitif in simple spritzes.
