Emergency Alert Severe is a type of emergency alert that can be received on Android phones. It is a message that is sent through the Cell Broadcasting System by the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India, to test the Pan-India Emergency Alert System being implemented by the National Disaster Management Authority. The message is a sample testing message, and no action is required from the recipients end. Emergency alerts are part of the nationwide Wireless Emergency Alerts system in operation since 2012 and an extension of the Emergency Alert System that replaced the Cold War-era Emergency Broadcast System in 1997. Emergency alerts can warn users about dangerous weather, missing persons, or other matters of grave national importance. There are three types of emergency alerts that can be received on Android phones: Extreme threats, AMBER alerts, and Public Safety Messages. Emergency alerts are on by default, but users can turn off all but the presidential alerts. To turn off Emergency SOS on Android phones, users can go to the phones Settings app, tap Safety & emergency, tap Emergency SOS, and then tap Turn off Emergency SOS.
