EMR stands for Electronic Medical Record, which is a digital version of a patients healthcare chart. EMR systems are software programs that allow healthcare practices to create, store, and receive these charts. EMRs can house valuable information about a patient, including medical and treatment history, diagnoses, allergies, immunization dates, lab results, medications, and physicians’ notes. EMR systems provide several key benefits to both healthcare staff and patients, including reducing and preventing medical errors, increasing efficiency of day-to-day operations, better coordination of care between staff, and stronger and faster overall treatment. There are different subtypes of EMR systems that are used on different operating systems and settings, which are as follows: Certified EMR systems, Mental Health EMR systems, and Specialty Driven EMR System Templates. EMRs must exist in order to have an EHR, which is an interorganizational system that is a compilation of many EMR records from a patients many doctor and hospital visits all in one place.
