Ethanol blending is the process of mixing ethanol with gasoline to create a blended motor fuel. Ethanol is a biofuel that is derived from agricultural products, such as sugarcane or corn, and is produced by the fermentation of sugar. Ethanol blending is important because it can reduce environmental degradation while adding extra income to the pocket of farmers. Ethanol blends are available in several different ratios, including:

• E10: A low-level blend composed of 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline. It is approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in any conventional vehicle.

• E15: A low-level blend composed of 10.5% to 15% ethanol and gasoline. It is approved for use in model year 2001 and newer light-duty conventional vehicles.

• E85: An ethanol-gasoline blend containing 51% to 83% ethanol, depending on geography and season. It can be used in flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs), which have an internal combustion engine and are designed to run on E85, gasoline, or any blend of gasoline and ethanol up to 83% .

Ethanol blending can help reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and save billions of dollars for the country. The Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme was launched in India in 2003 to promote the use of ethanol blended petrol. The E10 target achievement means that the petrol we use now has 10 percent ethanol mixed in it. Blender pumps are dispensers that draw and blend fuel from two tanks, and they work the same way for ethanol blends as they do for gasoline blends.
