EV mode is a feature available in many Toyota hybrid and plug-in hybrid models that allows the vehicle to operate as a fully electric vehicle, relying primarily on the power of the battery rather than the gas engine. When EV mode is initiated, the vehicle can be driven with pure electric power at low speeds for a limited range, typically up to about 25 mph for a mile or so under certain conditions. EV mode is more particular in its uses than other driving modes such as ECO, Power, Sport, and Snow. It is best to reserve the EV mode when you only need to drive a short distance that doesn’t require too much speed, such as when you’re driving out of the garage or looking for a parking spot. However, it is important to be careful when utilizing EV mode as it practically renders the car silent, which means pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users may not hear you approaching.
To use EV mode in a Toyota hybrid, you need to press the EV mode button on the center console, and the EV mode indicator will appear on the multi-information display. EV mode will automatically cancel when the battery is low, and you can resume hybrid function by pressing the EV mode button again.
