Explant surgery, also known as breast implant removal surgery, is a procedure that involves the removal of breast implants and any scar tissue that formed around the implants. In addition to removing breast implants, explant surgery may involve additional procedures to remove the layer of scar tissue around the implant, also known as the capsule. During the operation, a surgeon may also remove silicone material from implant leaks and the breast capsule. The surgery is commonly combined with a breast lift or fat transfer to the breasts in the same procedure to enhance breast volume and shape. The procedure is typically done under general anesthesia, and the surgeon makes an incision around the circle of darker skin around the nipple (areola) or under the lower fold of the breasts (inframammary fold) to remove the implants and scar tissue. After the surgery, it is not uncommon for the breasts to look saggy or droopy due to the skin stretching out, and a breast lift can be combined with explant surgery to tighten the skin. Some common reasons for explant surgery include dissatisfaction with breast size or appearance, implant complications, and health concerns.
