The F1 Sprint Shootout is a new qualifying session that was introduced in the 2023 season as part of the new F1 Sprint format. It is a standalone qualifying session for the sprint race and takes place on the Saturday of the designated race weekend. The Sprint Shootout follows the same three-session knockout format as usual qualifying, but each Q1, Q2, and Q3 segment has been shortened to 12, 10, and 8 minutes, respectively. The drivers have to use certain tires in certain sessions during the Sprint Shootout. In SQ1 and SQ2, medium tires must be used by all the drivers, while soft tires will be used in SQ3. These tires all need to be new sets as well, and if a driver doesnt have a new set available after qualifying the day before, they cannot take part in the Sprint Shootout qualifying session. The result of the Sprint Shootout sets the grid for the sprint race, which is a condensed race that takes place over 100km (around 62 miles) and is held on the same day as the Sprint Shootout. The sprint race results then set the starting grid for Sundays Grand Prix.
