In sewing and tailoring, facing is a small piece of fabric, separate or a part of the garment fabric itself, used to finish the fabric edges). It is a more substantial layer of additional fabric added to the edges of the garment, which adds additional support, strength, and prevents stretching). Facing makes a garment look professionally finished with the seams well hidden inside the folds of the facing). Facing is mostly used to finish the edges in necklines, armholes, hems, and openings). The facing is usually interfaced to add shape to the edge of the fabric and help the garment maintain the desired shape. The inside edge of the facing, the edge that is not attached to the garment, is finished in a seam finish type of method to prevent the facing from fraying. Most facings will require you to tack or slip stitch the facing to a seam allowance or inside part of the garment to assist the facing in staying inside the garment. There are three basic types of facings: shaped facings, extended facings, and bias facings.
