FAM can refer to two different things:
-
The fertility awareness method (FAM) is a non-hormonal method of birth control that relies on tracking hormonal biomarkers to identify the fertile time in a persons menstrual cycle. It is based on the physiological fact that women and menstruators are only fertile for a short time each cycle, approximately 7 days, which takes into account the 12-24 hours lifespan of the egg and 5-day lifespan of sperm in cervical mucus. FAM is a scientifically-based observational practice that is based on a persons own fertility signs, no matter how long or short their cycles are. FAM is approximately 76% effective in actual use, meaning that 24 people out of 100 would get pregnant using FAM methods as their only form of birth control.
-
"Fam" is a slang term that is short for "family" or "close friend". It is often used as a form of address, such as "Yo, fam, check it out".
It is important to note that these two meanings of FAM are not related to each other.
