FCA stands for "Free Carrier" and is a trade term used in shipping to describe the point at which a seller of goods is responsible for the delivery of those goods to a destination specified by the buyer. FCA can be used for any form of transport, such as air freight, sea freight, road freight, and rail freight. The key features of FCA include:

  • Sellers responsibility: The seller is responsible for export clearance, trucking within the export country, and delivery of goods to the agreed-on location in the sellers country. The seller is also responsible for export packaging, licenses, and customs formalities.

  • Buyers responsibility: The buyer is responsible for unloading the goods from the sellers transport and all transportation from that point, including any necessary trucking to the port from the handover location, if applicable. The buyer would be responsible for loading the goods for transport.

  • Delivery location: The point of delivery must be a location within the sellers home country. The buyer must clearly specify the precise point of delivery in the contract of sales or carriage.

FCA is used more for international shipments, and it works for different modes of transport including LCL (less than container load), FCL (full container load), and air when shipping freight. FCA is a flexible Incoterm, and can be used for intermodal transportation, as well as any other mode, especially for containerized freight, though it can also be used via air, ocean, and railway.
