A fecalysis test, also known as a stool analysis or stool culture, is a series of tests done on a stool (feces) sample to help diagnose certain conditions affecting the digestive tract. These conditions can include infection, inflammation, malabsorption, or cancer. The laboratory analysis of feces includes macroscopic examination (volume, odor, shape, color, consistency, the presence of mucus), microscopic examination (leukocytes, epithelial cells, meat fibers), and chemical tests for specific substances (occult blood, trypsin, estimation of carbohydrates) . A stool culture is done to find out if bacteria may be causing an infection. The test is performed by collecting a stool sample in a clean container and then sending it to the laboratory. The results of the test can be back in 24-48 hours or take 3-4 days depending on the type of test. The test is noninvasive, painless, and is a simple, rapid, inexpensive, and reliable examination.
