The FIDE World Cup is a major chess event organized by FIDE, the international governing body. It has been held in different formats over the years, including a multi-stage tournament with a group stage and knockout stage, a biennial 128-player single-elimination tournament, and a 206-player single-elimination tournament with a system of byes in the first round. The top three finishers in the tournament qualify for the Candidates Tournament, which is part of the qualification for the World Chess Championship. The FIDE World Cup is not to be confused with the World Championship Match, which is a separate event that determines the World Chess Champion. The FIDE World Cup 2023 was held in Baku, Azerbaijan from July 30 to August 24, and was an eight-round knockout event with the top 50 seeds given a bye directly into the second round. The tournament was won by Magnus Carlsen, who qualified for the Candidates Tournament along with the runner-up and third-place finisher.
