First Growth is a classification of wines primarily from the Bordeaux region of France. The term "First Growth" (French: Premier Cru) is used to denote the best of the best wines, which were assigned the highest rank of Premier Cru. Only five wines, Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Haut-Brion, Château Latour, and Château Mouton Rothschild, are rated First Growth. The need for a classification of the best Bordeaux wines arose from the 1855 Exposition Universelle de Paris, which resulted in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, a list of the top-ranked wines named the Grand Crus Classés (Great Classified Growths). The First Growth Bordeaux wines are among the worlds most expensive and famous wines. The First Growth Bordeaux producers are all located in the Left Bank, and three First Growth chateaux reside in Pauillac, one is in Margaux, and the other property is situated in Graves/Pessac Leognan. The First Growth wines are chased by wine drinkers, collectors, and speculators alike, and the title is coveted by winemakers because it would give them the ability to set high prices for their wine.
