Fluimucil is a brand name for acetylcysteine sachets and tablets that are used to clear phlegm and liquefy thick and viscous mucus secretions caused by respiratory conditions such as acute bronchitis, chronic bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, pulmonary emphysema, or bronchiectasis. It is a type of mucolytic that exerts an intensive mucolytic-fluidifying action on mucous and mucopurulent secretions by depolymerizing the mucoproteic complexes and the nucleic acids which confer viscosity to the vitreous and purulent component of the sputum and other secretions. Fluimucil is available over the counter (without a prescription) in most countries that have it. However, Fluimucil may not be compatible with certain medications, such as carbamazepine, nitroglycerin, or medications that also irritate the stomach. People with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance should not take Fluimucil granules as they contain sorbitol. Fluimucil is contraindicated in children below 2 years of age. The tablets or granules are dissolved in a glass containing a small quantity of water and usually taken 2 to 3 times daily when used to relieve congestion.
