FMT stands for fecal microbial transplantation, also known as stool transplantation or bacteriotherapy. It is a procedure in which fecal matter, or stool, is collected from a healthy donor and transplanted into the colon of a recipient. The goal of FMT is to repopulate the gut with healthy microbes, which can be effective in treating certain conditions such as Clostridium difficile (C. diff) infection. FMT is typically performed through colonoscopy, but can also be done through enema, nasogastric tube, or capsules. The procedure is still being studied for its potential use in treating other gastrointestinal diseases, such as colitis, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome, as well as neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis and Parkinsons disease.
