Foreign Object Debris (FOD) is any object, live or not, located in an inappropriate location in the airport environment that has the capacity to injure airport or air carrier personnel and damage aircraft. FOD is a serious concern in the aviation industry as it creates safety hazards and can ultimately impact safe operations by damaging aircraft. FOD can be found on all aircraft operating areas airside, including aprons, taxiways, and runways. FOD can cause damage to aircraft engines if ingested, cut aircraft tires, and lodge in aircraft mechanisms preventing them from operating properly. FOD-prevention and clearance is the responsibility of all airport users, and specific responsibility must be allocated to appropriate persons who must be suitably trained and supervised. The aviation industry has developed programs to control airside FOD, which are most effective when they address four principal aspects: awareness training, inspection by all airside personnel, maintenance/management, and coordination.
