The Sprint Shootout is a new session introduced in the revised Formula 1 sprint weekend format for the 2023 season. It is a standalone qualifying session held on Saturday before the Sprint Race, and its purpose is to determine the order of the grid for the Sprint Race. The starting grid for Sundays Grand Prix is determined in the qualifying session held on Friday. The Sprint Shootout follows the same three-session knockout format as usual qualifying, but each Q1, Q2, and Q3 segment has been shortened to 12, 10, and 8 minutes, respectively. All teams must use new tires, with new mediums used in Q1 and Q2, while drivers setting a lap time in Q3 will have to use new soft tires. If a driver does not have a new set of tires available after qualifying on Friday, they cannot take part in the Sprint Shootout qualifying session. The Sprint Shootout and the Sprint Race do not impact Sundays Grand Prix.
