A fraternity is a brotherhood or sisterhood formed around common goals and aspirations. Fraternities are traditionally associated with men, but the term can also refer to womens organizations. Members of a fraternity make a commitment to each other for life and share their efforts, friendship, and knowledge. Fraternities and sororities strive to enhance the college experience by challenging members to achieve academic excellence, develop leadership potential, and give back to the local community. Membership in a fraternity or sorority is a lifelong commitment, and relationships created during college last well beyond graduation. Fraternities and sororities may be divided into different groups, including social, service, professional, and honorary. They share common founding principles, such as lifelong friendship, sound education, campus and community service, and social interaction. Fraternities and sororities have their own traditions and rituals that members take part in during their initiation.
