FTO stands for Field Training Officer. It is a role in law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency medical services where an experienced or senior member of an organization is responsible for the training and evaluation of a junior or probationary level member. The FTO program is intended to provide a standardized program to facilitate the officers transition from the academic setting to the actual performance of general law enforcement duties within the department. Newly hired officers are assigned to a structured Field Training Officer Program that is designed to prepare the new officer to perform in a patrol assignment, and to ensure the officer possesses skills needed to operate in a safe and professional manner. The FTO program typically lasts 12 to 18 weeks, and during this time, the trainee may work for a short amount of time prior to attending a formal training-certification program. The FTO may complete part or the majority of the FTO program and then complete the remaining upon completion of the certification process. It is also not unusual for a trainee to have multiple field training officers that they rotate around to. The FTOs commitment to the role helps agencies develop exceptional officers.
