Fungal acne, also known as Malassezia folliculitis or Pityrosporum folliculitis, is a skin condition caused by an overgrowth of the yeast Malassezia in hair follicles. This yeast is naturally found on everyones skin, but it can overgrow in certain conditions, such as oily skin, humidity, or other pre-existing dermatologic conditions like seborrheic dermatitis and severe dandruff. Fungal acne causes clusters of small, itchy, red bumps (papules) on the skin, which can sometimes turn into whiteheads or small pockets of white or yellow pus (pustules) . It is important to distinguish between fungal and common acne because the treatments are different, although the two types of acne can happen at the same time. Fungal acne is most common in adolescents and young adult males, who tend to have oily skin where yeast thrive, and it is more likely to occur in people who sweat a lot or have a weakened immune system. Antifungal medications can treat the infection, and there are ways to prevent and relieve the rash-like symptoms.
