Gabapentin is a medication that is commonly used in cats to treat chronic pain, seizures, and anxiety. It is often prescribed by veterinarians to help reduce anxiety during vet visits, travel, or other changes to their environment, including introducing new members of the household or new pets. Gabapentin can reduce chronic pain caused by conditions such as arthritis or cancer, and it may be used to treat pain associated with intervertebral disk disease. Gabapentin is administered orally in the form of a capsule, tablet, or compounded liquid, and it can be given with or without food. The medication should be used with caution in pets with kidney disease or pets that are pregnant and/or lactating. The most common side effect of gabapentin in cats is mild sedation, but this usually goes away with continued use. Gabapentin is considered an off-label use in cats, which means it is not an FDA-approved indication in pets.
