Gaganyaan is an Indian crewed orbital spacecraft that is being developed to be the formative spacecraft of the Indian Human Spaceflight Programme. The spacecraft is designed to carry three people, and a planned upgraded version will be equipped with rendezvous and docking capabilities. The Gaganyaan mission envisages the demonstration of human spaceflight capability by launching a crew of three members to an orbit of 400 km for a three-day mission and bringing them back safely to earth, by landing in Indian sea waters. The spacecraft consists of two parts, the crew module (CM) and the service module (SM), which together form the orbital module. The CM is designed to carry up to three astronauts and will sit on top of the SM, which will contain the propulsion and power systems of the craft. The spacecraft is being developed at the cost of 90 billion rupees ($1 billion) and aims to send the astronauts to an orbit of 400 km and bring them back after three days. The pre-requisites for the Gaganyaan mission include the development of many critical technologies, including a human-rated launch vehicle for carrying the crew safely to space, a life support system to provide an earth-like environment to the crew in space, crew emergency escape provision, and evolving crew management aspects for training, recovery, and rehabilitation of the crew. The Gaganyaan mission has been expected to launch from the countrys main spaceport in Sriharikota before 2024, although a schedule had not been announced.
