Gallantry Awards are awards instituted by the Government of India to honor the acts of bravery and sacrifice of the officers/personnel of the Armed Forces, other lawfully constituted Forces, and civilians. These awards are announced twice a year, first on the occasion of Republic Day and then on the occasion of Independence Day. The awards are divided into two categories: peacetime and wartime. The peacetime awards are Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra, while the wartime awards are Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, and Vir Chakra. The awards are given to the valiant soldiers who have shown extraordinary courage and bravery in the face of danger. The President of India honors the countrys military personnel for their show of gallantry and valor with a total of six awards. These awards are given to the officers/personnel of the Armed Forces, other lawfully constituted Forces, and civilians who have shown exceptional bravery, courage, and devotion to duty of very high order.
