In business studies, the gang plank is a concept introduced by Henri Fayol, a French mining engineer and management theorist. According to Fayol, the scalar chain refers to the chain of authority and communication that runs from top to bottom and should be followed by managers and their subordinates. However, communication through the scalar chain may involve delays when two subordinates or employees at the same level want to exchange information. To avoid these delays and allow direct communication between two subordinates at the same level, Fayol suggested the concept of the gang plank. The gang plank is a shortcut chain in which two managers working at the same level can communicate with each other directly for quick communication.
