Garcinia cambogia is a tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia and India, also known as Malabar tamarind, brindle berry, and Garcinia gummi-gutta. The fruit looks like a small pumpkin and is green to pale yellow in color. The rind of the fruit contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), which is believed to reduce appetite and block the body from storing fat. However, the evidence for Garcinia cambogia supporting weight loss is not clear, and some studies have found no significant effects on weight loss. In addition, several dozen cases of liver toxicity have been reported in people who were taking products labeled as containing Garcinia cambogia. Therefore, the Food and Drug Administration considers it unsafe. Other side effects associated with Garcinia cambogia include headache, nausea, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. While Garcinia cambogia has been used as a condiment and food preservative in Asian countries, it is most often found in tea or as a supplement in the US.
