Gastroenteritis, commonly known as "gastro," is an illness caused by the infection and inflammation of the digestive system. It is usually triggered by a viral or bacterial infection, but can also be caused by parasites. The symptoms of gastroenteritis can include:
- Abdominal cramps
- Diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Bloating
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Bloody stools (in some cases)
- Pus in the stools (in some cases)
- Generally feeling unwell, including lethargy and body aches
The symptoms usually appear up to a day after becoming infected and typically last less than a week, but can sometimes last longer. Gastroenteritis can be caused by a variety of viruses, including rotavirus and norovirus, as well as bacteria such as Campylobacter and Escherichia coli. It is important to establish the cause of gastroenteritis, as different types respond to different treatments. Diagnostic methods may include a medical history, physical examination, blood tests, and stool tests. Treatment depends on the cause, but may include plenty of fluids and oral rehydration drinks. Antibiotics may be prescribed if the cause is bacterial. If you experience sudden diarrhea and vomiting, it is best to stay at home until youre feeling better. You dont usually need to see a doctor if you think you have gastroenteritis, as it should get better on its own, but you should seek medical advice if youre concerned or feel you need advice.
