A gazetted holiday is a holiday that is declared mandatory by the government. This means that the holiday must be observed by schools, banks, and typically many employers observe the holiday as well. The term "gazetted holiday" is typically only used in countries that were formerly colonized by the British, such as India, Singapore, and Australia. In India, for example, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions issues a list of holidays to be observed in central government offices during the year, which is divided into two parts: Annexure I (Gazetted holidays) and Annexure II (Restricted holidays). Gazetted holidays are mandatory holidays that are observed compulsorily across India, while restricted holidays are optional and allow employees to choose which holidays they want to observe.
