GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) is a type of depressant drug that acts as a nervous system depressant. It is an illegal drug that is sometimes used as a party drug and produces feelings of euphoria, relaxation, sociability, and an increased sex drive. GHB is also known as grievous bodily harm (GBH), fantasy, liquid ecstasy, liquid E, liquid X, Georgia Home Boy, soap, scoop, cherry meth, blue nitro, and fishies. GHB comes in a few forms including a colorless, odorless, bitter or salty-tasting liquid, a blue-colored liquid, and crystals or powder. GHB is usually swallowed, but sometimes it’s injected or inserted anally.

GHB is a dangerous drug that poses a risk for dependence, and even a small increase in dose can cause serious effects or death. When mixed with alcohol, it has a depressant effect that can cause someone to black out, which is why GHB is often called the date rape drug. Side effects of GHB use include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and vision changes. People who take GHB may become unconscious, stop breathing, and go into a coma, and GHB use can be fatal.

It is important to note that GHB is not the same as sodium oxybate, which is a medication approved by the FDA to treat narcolepsy and is sold under the trade name Xyrem.
