Ginning is the process of removing the seeds and debris from cotton. It is done after picking cotton, and the process involves drying, cleaning, and separating the seed from cotton. The term comes from the cotton gin, which was invented by Eli Whitney in 1794. The cotton gin is a machine that quickly and easily separates cotton fibers from their seeds, enabling much greater productivity than manual cotton separation. The gin is made with two rotating cylinders, and the first cylinder has lines of teeth around the circumference, which grip the cotton as it rotates, dragging it through small holes. The seeds are too big to fit through the holes and are thus removed from the rotating cotton by the metal plate before they fall into a collecting pot. Modern ginning uses advanced machinery and technology to deliver the highest standard of quality removal of fiber from seeds and remove impurities from fiber. After ginning, the separated seeds are utilized to grow more cotton or to manufacture cottonseed oil.
