Gorilla hail is a term coined by storm chaser Reed Timmer to describe hailstones that are larger than usual. Despite the name, gorilla hail does not mean hailstones the size of an actual gorilla. Hailstones are often described in terms of their size relative to objects such as a pea, a golf ball, or a nickel. Gorilla hail is much bigger, with a larger-than-usual diameter for a hailstone. According to the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS), gorilla hail has appeared in parts of Texas on multiple occasions, with hailstones "up to the size of a grapefruit". Some have described gorilla hail as being approximately the size of a baseball, while others have reported hailstones as large as 5 inches. Gorilla hail is not a common weather event, but according to Reed Timmer, it is becoming more common.
