Grace Hopper is most known for her contributions to computer programming, software development, and the design and implementation of programming languages. She was a pioneer in developing computer technology and helped devise UNIVAC I, the first commercial electronic computer, and naval applications for COBOL (common-business-oriented language) . Hopper was one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer and invented the first compiler for a computer programming language. She popularized the idea of machine-independent programming languages, which led to the development of COBOL, one of the first modern programming languages.
