A group discussion is a conversation about a particular topic or range of topics conducted in a group of individuals who share a similar interest. It can be either formal or informal and can be used for various purposes such as discussing ideas, solving problems, making comments, or testing a candidates communication and leadership skills. In a group discussion, all members of the group have a chance to speak, express their own ideas and feelings freely, and pursue and finish out their thoughts. The group members can safely test out ideas that are not yet fully formed, and all members can hear others ideas and feelings stated openly. The location of the group conversation does not have to be at the table, and any seating arrangement is okay as long as everyone can see one anothers faces. An effective group discussion generally has many different ideas and viewpoints that are heard and considered, allowing the group to accomplish its purpose if it has one or to establish a basis for ongoing discussion or further contact and collaboration among its members.
