Hades is the god of the dead and the king of the underworld in ancient Greek religion and mythology. He is one of the twelve Olympian gods and the eldest son of Cronus and Rhea. Hades received the underworld, Zeus the sky, and Poseidon the sea, with the solid earth available to all three concurrently. Hades presided over funeral rites and defended the right of the dead to due burial. He is typically portrayed holding a bident and wearing his helm with Cerberus, the three-headed guard-dog of the underworld, standing at his side. Hades is also associated with symbols like pomegranates, snakes, dogs, chariots, white poplar, and cypress trees. In Greek mythology, Hades is most known for kidnapping and marrying Demeters daughter, Persephone.
