Hadestown is a sung-through musical with music, lyrics, and book by Anaïs Mitchell. It is a modern retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, set in a post-apocalyptic New Orleans French Quarter-style setting. The musical intertwines two mythic tales - that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and Queen Persephone - as it invites the audience on an unforgettable journey to the underworld and back. Eurydice, a young girl looking for something to eat, goes to work in a hellish industrial version of the Greek underworld to escape poverty and the cold, and her poor singer-songwriter lover Orpheus comes to attempt to rescue her. The story follows Orpheus as he embarks on a perilous journey to rescue Eurydice from the world of the dead, known as Hadestown, and navigate not only the gods and their whimsy but also his own inherent human flaws. The musical features a vibrant ensemble of actors, singers, and dancers, and the songs give insight into each character and are relatable to everyone in the audience. Hadestown is the proud recipient of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
