Haji is an honorific title given to a Muslim person who has successfully completed the Hajj to Mecca. The Hajj is the annual pilgrimage to Mecca that is mandatory for all Muslims to make at least once in their lives, provided they are physically and financially able to do so. The pilgrimage rite begins on the 7th day of Dhū al-Ḥijjah and ends on the 12th day. During the Hajj, pilgrims enter Mecca and walk seven times around the sacred shrine called the Kaaba, in the Great Mosque, kiss or touch the Black Stone (al-Ḥajar al-Aswad) in the Kaaba, pray twice in the direction of the Maqām Ibrāhīm and the Kaaba, and run seven times between the minor prominences of Mount Ṣafā and Mount Marwah. Once a believer has completed the pilgrimage, he or she may add the title ḥājj or ḥajjī (for a male) or ḥājjah (for a female) to their name. In Arab countries, ḥājj and ḥājjah is a commonly used manner of addressing any older person respectfully, regardless of whether or not the person in question has actually performed the pilgrimage. In Malay-speaking countries, Haji and Hajah are titles given to Muslim males and females respectively who have performed the pilgrimage.
