Halal is an Arabic word that translates to "permissible" or "lawful" in English. It is a term used in Islamic culture to refer to actions and behaviors that are considered permissible according to Islamic teachings. Halal is often associated with Islamic dietary laws, which specify what foods and beverages are considered permissible under Islamic law. Conversely, foods that are not considered halal are considered haram or "not permitted". The Islamic form of slaughtering animals or poultry, dhabiha, involves killing through a cut to the jugular vein, carotid artery, and windpipe. Animals must be alive and healthy at the time of slaughter, and all blood must be drained from the carcass. During the process, a Muslim will recite a dedication, known as tasmiya or shahada. Halal certification is a formal recognition by a credible organization that a food product, its ingredients, and the process involved in its creation comply with the principles of Islamic dietary laws.
