In Formula 1, the Halo is a mandatory head protection device introduced in 2018 to improve driver safety. It is a three-pronged tubular titanium structure that surrounds the cockpit of a Formula 1 car and acts as a shield to deflect or absorb impact forces. The Halo is manufactured by three approved companies for the F1 teams to then add to their racing cars. The F1-spec Halo is made from strong, lightweight titanium tubing, which is then attached to the car’s carbon fibre chassis at three points for maximum rigidity. The system adds around 9kg to the car’s weight. The Halo protects the drivers head from large pieces of flying debris as well as if cars launch on top of one another, or a car takes a direct hit into a safety vehicle. The Halo is mandatory on every vehicle in Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3, Formula Regional, Formula E, and also Formula 4 as a new safety measure).
