Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a mild, contagious viral infection that is common in young children, but anyone can get it. It is caused by a group of viruses called nonpolio enteroviruses, most commonly coxsackievirus 16. The illness is usually not serious, but it is very contagious and can spread quickly at schools and day care centers. Symptoms of HFMD usually include fever, mouth sores, and skin rash. The rash is commonly found on the hands and feet. Other symptoms may include sore throat, feeling unwell, painful, blister-like lesions on the tongue, gums, and inside of the cheeks, and a rash on the buttocks, legs, and arms. HFMD is typically mild and usually clears up on its own within seven to ten days. There is no specific treatment for HFMD, but frequent hand-washing and avoiding close contact with people who have HFMD may help lower the risk of infection. It is important to call a healthcare provider if a child is younger than six months, has a weakened immune system, or has mouth sores or a sore throat that makes it painful to drink fluids.
